For the very first time in the studio’s history, A Kopp welcomed an intern into our fold this past May.
Trevor C., a junior from Breck High School, served about 50 hours over the course of two weeks at our studio. Internships are an opportunity Breck offers to upperclassmen during the last two weeks of the school year. At the conclusion of his internship, Trevor was required to give a presentation to his advisor.
As an education-based organization, we were enthusiastic about creating an internship program that would prove valuable for students who are serious about pursuing a career in music performance and/or music education.
Our program consisted of three main parts: Teaching Music Lessons, Back Office Administration & General Business Sneak Peak, and Piano Technician Hands-On Learning.
Trevor’s internship began on Saturday, May 16, offsite at a PTG workshop. That event was hosted by Kieran Wells of Wells Piano off Snelling & Palace Avenues in St Paul. Since Andy was the local chapter Vice President this past year, he helped to organize the event.
Trevor participated in the class on Hammer Hanging that was presented and facilitated by Josie Davis of Brooks Ltd. out of Connecticut. Throughout the following weeks, he sat in on many classes as well as taught a handful of saxophone classes that ranged from new players to intermediate and jazz students. Additionally, he assisted with scheduling, billing, inventory, and ordering of merchandise. Finally, he assisted with building the single action upright and grand piano models that will be featured in an upcoming learning installation later this summer.
Said Trevor, “It was so interesting to see the behind-the-scenes work during these two weeks, understanding how the place is run, how Alicia and Andy teach their students, and how they connect with the families of the students. It was such an insightful experience.”
Andy and I couldn’t have been more pleased with Trevor and the internship experience and are eager to offer the same opportunity to other enthusiastic students in the future.
