It’s Virtually Effortless

These past few years, we’ve all had to adapt to a new way of doing things. And as happens with most change, we discover things we didn’t expect.

We were initially concerned when we transitioned to online lessons but have been delightfully surprised to see that despite not being in person, we have built close, genuine connections with our students, even those as young as 4 or 5.

Online learning has proved to be a powerful tool.

Getting Started

Like so many of you, we had never heard of Zoom before the spring of 2020. Now we could teach a webinar on the application. But even if you’re a Zoom pro, we ask that you review the following information that contains specific instructions on your Zoom settings to optimize your online music lesson experience.

Step One: Once you’ve registered for your music lessons, we’ll send out an email to you that will confirm your information such as instrument, instructor, start date, lesson day, and time, etc. The email will also contain your Zoom Meeting ID and Zoom Password.

Step Two: If you don’t already have it on your computer or tablet, you will need to download Zoom to your device. Connections over the app are better quality than through a web browser. Devices that are connected directly to your modem/router will have a better streaming session than those on WiFi. If you are connecting over WiFi, getting as close to your modem/router or WiFi booster as possible will give you better results.

Frequent Freezing During Lesson

One of the biggest culprits to freezing is bandwidth demand throughout the household. Multiple devices all streaming content simultaneously can interfere with the video data stream, and even the sound stream freezing one or both. Make sure that your home has adequate connection speeds and bandwidth to avoid freezing issues. If it continues to persist, make sure that the number of devices drawing from the WiFi during your student's lesson time is minimized.

Technology Recommendations

For laptop and desktop computer users, investment in an external camera and microphone can be very beneficial to your online music lesson experience. Built-in cameras and microphones are small and cheaply made, particularly on mass produced student devices provided by your child's school.

For those on a tablet or phone, a small plug and play microphone will greatly enhance the sound your instructor hears.

For online music lessons it is important that the Zoom Audio is set up correctly. These instructions will show you how to adjust the settings both before and while logged into a Zoom Meeting. This is a multiple step process.

Step 1 - Click on the GEAR icon in the upper Right corner.

Step 5 - UNCHECK box that says "Automatically adjust microphone volume" This will allow you to grab and move the Input Volume button.

Step 6 - Select "Original Sound for Musicians." Check the boxes for all options: "High-Fidelity Music Mode", "Echo Cancellation", and "Stereo Audio."

Step 7 - This last step happens once you are logged in. One your settings are set, move around to reveal the GREEN SHIELD in the upper LEFT corner. Next to it click on the words Original Sound for Musicians: so that it says ON.

Step 1 - From the icons at the bottom of the screen, CLICK on the ^ next to the Microphone Icon.

Step 2 - When you CLICK on the ^ by the Microphone Icon it will open up a drop down menu.

Step 3 - In the drop down menu, CLICK on AUDIO SETTINGS.

Step 1 - From Zoom Homescreen click on Meeting Settings or the 3 dots MORE icon in the lower right corner.

Step 3 - Logged into Zoom, scroll along the icons at the bottom of the screen to locate the 3 dots MORE icon.

Step 5 - CLICK on "Enable Original Sound"

Step 6 - If it says "Disable Original Sound" then your Original Sound is ON.

Step 7 - If you do not see Enable/Disable Original Sound, then it was not turned on before the meeting. To get there from the meeting click on the < icon in the upper LEFT corner.

Step 9 - Here Use Original Audio is off. Click it to turn it on.

Step 10 - If it is GREEN then Use Original Audio is on and you can click on your meeting screen in the upper RIGHT to return to your meeting.

Step 4 - Log into Zoom and CLICK on the 3 dots MORE icon in the upper RIGHT

Step 5 - Click on Enable Original Audio.

Step 6 - If it says Disable Original Audio then it is ON.

Step 7 - If you do not see Enable/Disable Original Audio then it needs to be turned out in the settings outside of the meeting. To get there CLICK on Meeting Settings.

Step 8 - Once in the Meeting Settings turn on "Use Original Audio" and click on your meeting screen in the upper right to get back to the meeting.

You will need to confirm your sound volume with your instructor. Depending on your instrument and setup, the volume level may need to be louder or quieter.

Your instructor will help coach you with best placement for camera angles. A view that includes your instrument and face is most preferable. For some instruments (ex. piano) we may require a side view.
